Is Your Amazon Fire TV Device Affected by the Netflix Discontinuation?

If you’re an owner of an older Amazon Fire TV Stick, you might have already noticed the absence of software and security updates on your device. Despite this, you might still be using it regularly. However, an impending change will impact one of the most sought-after streaming apps – Netflix.

According to reports from PC World, Amazon has officially declared that certain Fire TV models will lose access to Netflix starting early next month. This move could potentially affect your streaming habits and overall entertainment experience.

Netflix Compatibility with Amazon Fire TV Devices

As of now, all Amazon Fire TV products support Netflix. However, this will soon change. Starting from June 3, 2025, the first-generation Amazon streaming devices will no longer be compatible with Netflix. This includes the 1st generation Fire TV, 1st generation Fire TV Stick 1, and 1st generation Fire TV Stick with Alexa voice remote.

While the exact reason for this change remains undisclosed, there are speculations that it could be due to Netflix’s utilization of the AV1 codec for enhanced picture quality, a feature crucial for users on the Premium 4K plan—a feature these first-generation devices lack.

Should You Upgrade Your 1st Generation Amazon Fire TV Device?

The decision to upgrade your device depends on your Netflix usage. For regular Netflix viewers, there won’t be a workaround to bypass the impending app blockade, making an upgrade the only viable solution. Even for occasional Netflix users, upgrading might be beneficial.

Considering that software and security updates ceased more than five years ago for these first-generation models, you might already be facing performance issues like buffering. Investing in a new device can not only restore Netflix access but also improve overall performance.

Amazon offers the latest Fire TV Stick for as low as £29.99/$29.99. If this price point is still too steep, consider waiting for popular sale events like Amazon Prime Day in July or the November Black Friday deals for potential discounts.

Alternatively, explore other streaming stick options for a wider range of choices that suit your preferences and budget.
