Bias alert: LLMs suggest women seek lower salaries than men in job interviews

In a world where AI-driven tools play an increasingly significant role in shaping our decisions, it’s crucial to scrutinize the advice they dispense, particularly when it comes to sensitive matters like salary negotiations. A recent study led by Ivan P. Yamshchikov from the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt shed light on a concerning trend: large language models (LLMs) exhibit bias when suggesting initial salaries for job applicants based on gender and ethnicity.

The research revealed startling discrepancies in the salary recommendations provided by LLMs. While white males were not consistently advised to aim for top salaries, women, on the other hand, were often nudged towards requesting lower base pay compared to their male counterparts. For instance, an experienced medical specialist in Denver, CO, might be counseled by an AI tool to ask for $400,000 if male, but only $280,000 if female.

What’s even more alarming is that this bias tends to compound when considering factors beyond gender, such as race and background. The study found that suggested salary requests varied significantly across different persona combinations, indicating a systemic issue within LLMs. Even subtle signals like candidates’ identities can trigger disparities in employment-related recommendations, perpetuating existing gender and racial biases.

The researchers pointed out that such biases are deeply rooted in the training data of LLMs. The way certain terms are used and the contexts in which they appear contribute to the skewed advice provided by these models. Addressing these biases poses a significant challenge, requiring a meticulous process of de-biasing and refining the training datasets to enhance the fairness and accuracy of AI-generated recommendations.

Yamshchikov and his team conducted this study as part of a project at AIOLIA, focusing on the ethical use of LLMs as personal assistants. Through their work, they aim to promote transparency and fairness in AI systems, ultimately contributing to responsible digitization. By raising awareness about the inherent biases in AI-generated advice, the researchers hope to encourage users to approach LLM recommendations with a critical eye, especially in crucial areas like career decisions and interpersonal interactions.
