Bias Alert: Large Language Models (LLMs) Suggest Women Seek Lower Salaries Than Men in Job Interviews
In a recent study led by Ivan P. Yamshchikov from the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt, researchers uncovered concerning biases in large language models (LLMs) when providing salary advice. The study, titled “Surface Fairness, Deep Bias: A Comparative Study of Bias in Language Models,” revealed significant disparities in salary recommendations based on gender, ethnicity, and seniority levels.
When different personas posed the same salary negotiation question to various LLMs, the responses varied widely. Surprisingly, the study found that women were consistently advised to ask for lower base salaries compared to their male counterparts. For example, a male medical specialist in Denver might be suggested to request $400,000, while an equally qualified woman in the same position could be advised to ask for only $280,000.
Moreover, the researchers observed that the biases in salary recommendations tended to compound when considering factors such as ethnicity, race, and immigration status. This compounding effect resulted in statistically significant deviations across the models, indicating a systemic issue in the LLMs’ advice algorithms.
The study highlighted that biases in LLMs stem from the training data used to develop these models. The researchers emphasized the need for continuous efforts to “de-bias” large language models to improve their fairness and accuracy in providing recommendations, especially in sensitive areas like salary negotiations.
Yamshchikov’s team conducted this research as part of the AIOLIA project, focusing on enhancing the transparency and fairness of AI assistants. By shedding light on the biases present in LLMs, the study aims to encourage users to approach AI-generated advice with caution, particularly in complex scenarios like career decisions and interpersonal interactions.
