Sonos may not take on the Apple TV 4K after all

Sonos, known for its exceptional audio products, was rumored to be entering the video streaming market with a high-end device codenamed Pinewood. This streaming box aimed to compete with popular options like the Apple TV 4K and Google TV Streamer. It promised not only top-notch 4K HDR playback but also a seamless user interface aggregating content from various streaming services.

One standout feature of the proposed Sonos streaming box was its HDMI passthrough capability. Users could connect external devices like gaming consoles and Blu-Ray players to enjoy wireless audio through Sonos speakers without any lag. Additionally, the device could configure a complete surround sound system using different Sonos speakers, enhancing the overall home entertainment experience.

However, recent reports suggest that Sonos has decided to cancel the Pinewood project. The change in leadership, with interim CEO Tom Conrad at the helm, prioritizes reinforcing the company’s core offerings to rebuild its reputation. Following a tumultuous Sonos app relaunch, the focus now shifts to restoring trust in its software rather than venturing into new video territory.

As a result of this strategic shift, the team dedicated to the Pinewood project will be redirected to other initiatives within Sonos. This decision indicates that Sonos will likely not unveil any major products in 2025, with its most recent launches being the Sonos Sub Gen 4 and Arc Ultra in October 2024. The cancellation of the streaming box underscores the company’s commitment to addressing internal challenges before expanding into new markets.

While the Pinewood project may have been an exciting prospect for Sonos enthusiasts, the company’s decision to halt its development underscores the importance of maintaining a strong foundation in core offerings. By focusing on enhancing existing products and rebuilding customer trust, Sonos aims to solidify its position in the audio industry before considering further expansion into the competitive video streaming market.
