As a Tech Advisor’s Mobile Editor, being glued to my smartphone is part of the job. Yet, the constant distractions and mindless scrolling were taking a toll on my well-being. So, I decided to take a radical step: switching to a dumb phone for seven days.

The Nokia 110, my chosen device for this experiment, offered basic functionality with no frills. No more Chrome, WhatsApp, or Google Maps. It was a stark contrast to the all-encompassing nature of smartphones. Despite the initial shock, I was strangely excited to embrace this change.

The first day brought discomfort and the realization of my dependency on technology for instant gratification. Blocking distracting sites on my laptop and having a quality call with my grandma on the simple phone highlighted its core purpose: communication.

Throughout the week, I navigated challenges like missing Google Keep for my shopping list and adapting to one screen at a time. Yet, the experience also brought moments of peace, focus, and genuine relaxation that had been missing in my smartphone-dominated routine.

By the end of the experiment, I felt calmer, more present, and less stressed. It wasn’t just about the phone; it was about reducing distractions and prioritizing mindfulness. While I don’t plan to give up my smartphone entirely, I aim to strike a balance that allows me to enjoy its benefits without succumbing to mindless usage.

The seven-day journey with a dumb phone was eye-opening. It showed me the power of disconnecting and being more intentional with technology. As I reintegrated my smartphone back into my life, I did so with a newfound awareness of the need for mindful usage.
