The recent two-hour outage of Zoom’s American service sparked a flurry of finger-pointing among involved parties. Zoom attributed the incident to a “communications error” between its domain registrar, Markmonitor, and GoDaddy Registry, resulting in the shutdown of the zoom.us domain. On the other hand, GoDaddy stated that the issue lay between Markmonitor and Zoom, highlighting a breakdown in communication channels.

Kristy Nicholas from GoDaddy mentioned that despite notifying Markmonitor about an inquiry concerning Zoom, the information was not relayed to the company promptly. This miscommunication led to GoDaddy taking action to block the server after waiting for a response from Zoom. Such lapses in communication, although not uncommon, can have significant repercussions, as seen in this outage.

In response to the situation, Markmonitor’s parent company, Newfold Digital, emphasized the need to enhance coordination and communication between GoDaddy Registry and Markmonitor to prevent similar incidents in the future. However, Zoom did not provide a response to GoDaddy’s claims by the time of publication, leaving some aspects of the issue unresolved.
