Its ability to integrate seamlessly with various devices and offer free VOIP services made it a game-changer. However, despite its early promise, Google Voice has stagnated, failing to keep up with modern messaging standards like RCS.

Google’s vocal advocacy for RCS implementation, especially in the Apple ecosystem, contrasts sharply with its neglect of Google Voice. While pushing for interoperability, the inability of Voice to support RCS reflects poorly on Google’s commitment to its own services. Users, including tech journalists, have long voiced concerns over this inconsistency, feeling abandoned in a platform that seems frozen in time.

The Fi Fiasco

On the other hand, Google Fi, the tech giant’s foray into the mobile virtual network operator space, presented a compelling option for users seeking affordable and feature-rich cellular services. However, my experience trying to port my Google Voice number to Fi revealed a disheartening reality.
